How to Watch Your Calories When Dining Out at a Restaurant

By

You Can Still Eat Healthy and Dine Out

With a large number of the consumer population growing more health conscious by the minute, it’s no surprise that many people are looking for ways to watch calories when dining out at local restaurants. Restaurants are jumping on the healthy bandwagon and now offer a variety of healthy options, but there are still a few tricks consumers can use to cut out added fat.

Watch Calories and Carbohydrates

One of the easiest ways for people to cut out calories is to always order dressings and sauces on the side. Many items that seem healthy, like salads, often come with calorie-heavy ingredients that are not kind to the waist-band. By ordering your dressings on the side, you can control how much you actually use.

Always ask for grilled items like fish and chicken to be prepared without butter or oil. This can dramatically cut down on the amount of calories a menu item has. Don’t forget to do the same thing with vegetables. People often think of grilled veggies as healthy, but they may be cooked in butter or oil. Always ask to have your veggies steamed.

Another way to cut calories is to order a salad with a light dressing as an appetizer. By doing this you are helping yourself not to be famished by the time your meal comes, and then eating to excess. Many people overeat in a restaurant setting just to be social. You are much less likely to overindulge if you are full.

Remember that it's not only calories that you want to watch but carbohydrates as well. They get converted to sugar when they are digested and too much sugar will increase insulin. Insulin will have your body store those sugars and also make you feel more hungry. So watch calories but also watch which kinds of calories you are eating.

The Appetizers and Desserts at Local Restaurants

If you can’t resist the urge to order an unhealthy appetizer, split it with a friend. Half the portion means half the fat, so feel free to indulge, as long as you stick to your side of the plate. Again, ask for sauce to be placed on the side. You can also ask for less cheese to be added. Many restaurants sprinkle these items on at the end of preparation so it’s no problem for them to be kept off.

When it comes to dessert, it’s hard to have restraint when others are letting loose. Many restaurants now offer fresh fruit and berries on their dessert menus. If you want to treat yourself, order a fruit plate for dessert with a light cappuccino on the side. The fruit will appease your sweet tooth, and the light cappuccino is an added treat.

Always remember that you are not forced to eat poorly when dining out. There are a multitude of ways to stay fit in even the unhealthiest restaurants. Don’t be afraid to ask what your server can do to have your dish prepared in a healthier way. Restaurants rely on your patronage so give them your feedback, and know that you are in control of your caloric consumption.

If you like to travel or live in Wisconsin, then try searching for some local Madison restaurants that offer great menu choices. These days, more and more restaurants in every area are adding some low calorie and low carbohydrate options to their menus that taste great. It's just up to you to choose those options.

Eating out is a nightmare you just have no control over the fat content or calories in your food, although some restaurants are introducing lighter menus but they still don't put on the menu the information so you can make a truly conscious decision when you're choosing. I put a lot of recipes on Hubpages and have recently started putting some low fat/low calorie recipes on and would love to know what you think; http://eileengoodall.hubpages.com/_112qvdkcdu1s0/
