Do your homework before dining out, research restaurants online, you can find nutritional information and menus online for most restaurants. Make sure they offer substitutions or if they offer reduced portions or low-calorie dishes. This will give you the resources to plan your meal before you get there. Avoid any restaurants offering buffets, this will only lead to overeating.

If the restaurant choice is not up to you, drink plenty of water before going out to dinner, and drink water with lemon during the meal. The water will give you a more full feeling, therefore you will be less hungry and order less. Avoid alcohol at all costs, they tend to be high in calories.

Order your food grilled or broiled instead of fried, and any sauces that come with the meal, order them on the side, this way you control how much is put on your food. Try to order smaller portions, if the restaurant doesn’t offer it, then don’t be afraid to ask for a doggy bag, take half the meal home with you.

How to Eat Healthy at Restaurants

If you are going to order salad, make sure it is a side salad and not a dinner salad. A lot of restaurants add croutons, cheese, meats etc. to their salads, which can sometimes add up to more calories than a simple grilled chicken meal.

If you feel the need to order a desert, try a bowl of mixed fruit with a small amount of whipped cream, low-fat if they have it, no need to sit and watch everyone else enjoy desert, you can enjoy it too with the right choice.

Avoid meals with several ingredients, stick to single item meals, casseroles and pastas tend to have hidden ingredients you are not aware of that will raise the calorie and fat count of your meal.

Eat slow, give your stomach time to digest what you are eating. This is a common mistake people make when dieting, eating to fast doesn’t allow your stomach and brain to connect fast enough to tell you when you are full.

Follow these simple suggestions and you will not run the risk of wrecking your diet when dining out, and you will actually enjoy yourself without the added stress associated with dieting. Like we said, you should research restaurants online. Find Madison WI restaurants or other restaurants in major cities at online restaurant directories.
